Training & More, for Science & Maths Teachers: Scientix - European Projects, Resources

Post Primary

A 2 day workshop on Computational Thinking in the Sciences.  The workshop is organised by the Pathway project team based in Education Studies, Dublin City University. This workshop will be in collaboration with teachers from the Shodor Education Foundation, North Carolina, USA.

In the workshop, we will explore how advances in interactive, dynamic computing enable new visualizations in math, biology, physics and chemistry. Moving beyond Power Pointlessness, we have the opportunity to demonstrate that effective use of computing really matters if we are to improve education and research in the sciences. Computing matters because quantitative reasoning, computational thinking, and multi scale modelling are the intellectual heart and soul of 21st Century science and therefore are the essential skills of the 21st Century workforce. Computing matters because we can apply the power of interactive computing to reach a deeper understanding of math and science and their role in understanding the world.

Is Féidir Liom (IFL) – A Comprehensive Foundational Course in Irish for Parents

Post Primary

IFL is aimed at absolute beginners and it is designed to be simple and enjoyable but purposeful. It consists of a book, conversation-generating Interactive, supplementary materials and card games.

IFL points out patterns in Irish and gives the parents a basic understanding of the structure of the language so that they have the confidence to help their children. IFL teaches parents how to use an Irish dictionary. IFL circumvents the word 'grammar' as much as possible and participants are not expected to write Irish other than completing exercises in the book. IFL is mostly listening and responding to audio prompts and engaging interactively with the resources. IFL is written in English and the on-line Audio Pages help with Irish pronunciation when learners use the book at home. Tutors are in agreement that IFL has just the right pitch and it is the most appropriate approach to take with parents/grandparents whose main focus is to help their children learn Irish at school. It's not about fluency nor even about conversational Irish. The natural follow-up to the enthusiasm born out of IFL, is a Beginners' Course in conversational Irish (and there are many such courses available). IFL is unique in that it is foundational. It's true in more ways than one that: 'Is Féidir Linn' begins with 'Is Féidir Liom' agus is fearr tosú ag an tosach.
