‘Choose Safety’ is a series of lessons and student activities designed for students in the following programmes: Transition Year, Leaving Certificate Applied and Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme. It may also be adapted for use with other year groups. It is particularly useful for students who engage in Work Experience or Community Service during the school year. Parts of the programme may supplement lessons in such subjects as Science, Home Economics and the Technology subjects The programme centres around SIX units. The 20 hour programme may betaught over the full year or condensed to suit the time-table arrangements in your school. Teachers may pick sections of the programme that best suit their students.
The Six Modules are:
1. Accidents Happen (Identifying the hazards)
2. Wanna Bet? (Considering the risks)
3. You’ve been warned (Controlling risk)
4. Not my problem!...Is it? (Looking at responsibility)
5. Who do I tell? How do I tell? (Communication Skills)
6. It has happened before (Case Studies)
All schools that wish to teach the ‘Choose Safety’ programme will receive copies of the text for each participating student as well as a teacher’s text and DVD. There is no cost to the school.
‘Choose Safety’ contains more than enough material for the equivalent of one class period per week throughout the year.
